> Under Millions of Repeated Deformations, How Does Laifual Drive Preserve the Precision and Life of the Flexspline? FOREWORD
The precision and service life of a strain wave gear depend on material, tooth profile, machining, and assembly. Behind these visible decisions lies one process that sets the performance ceiling: heat treatment. It does not affect the component’s appearance, yet it determines whether the flexspline can endure millions of deformation cycles without failure.
The flexspline is thin-walled, flexible, and continuously subjected to alternating stress. Its internal microstructure directly determines surface hardness, core toughness, and fatigue life. Heat treatment may be invisible in the final product, but it is the foundation upon which all performance is built.
As one of the few manufacturers in China’s strain wave gear industry with in-house heat treatment capabilities, Laifual Drive has made this critical process a core part of its fully integrated production system. By bringing heat treatment in-house, we eliminate external variables and maintain full control from material sourcing to finished product delivery.
The flexspline is the precision heart of a strain wave gear: wall thickness measured in fractions of a millimeter, yet required to maintain micron-level accuracy through high-frequency deformation. It must satisfy three conflicting demands:
Hard surface
❞
resists wear and pitting, ensuring tooth flank durability;
Tough core
❞
absorbs impact, delays fatigue, prevents crack initiation;
Stable dimensions
❞
even minor distortion during heat treatment compromises tooth profile accuracy.
These requirements are tightly coupled. Any uncontrolled variable, such as an outsourced process or an unverified parameter, can compromise both precision and life. This is why heat treatment is the performance watershed: the same drawing, processed with different materials and methods, yields fundamentally different hardness gradients, stress states, and fatigue limits. Achieving stability, controllability, and traceability in this step is what turns specifications into real-world reliability.
Laifual Drive has developed multiple proprietary patent portfolios around heat treatment for thin-walled flexible gears, including:
- Heat treatment process for thin-walled flexible gears used in strain wave gears
- Composite microstructure and heat treatment method for 40CrNiMoA steel
- Heat treatment process for improving flexible gear strength
- Combined forging and heat treatment process for super-strength steel

A Complete In-House Heat Treatment System
◀◀◀◀◀
At Laifual Drive’s manufacturing base, heat treatment is not a single piece of equipment but a complete process system built around the diverse requirements of different materials and components. The dedicated in-house workshop is equipped with multiple furnace types that work together to cover a full range of processes, including quenching, tempering, and austempering, from atmospheric to vacuum-based treatments. This enables Laifual Drive to handle the varied heat treatment demands of flexsplines, circular splines, and other critical components, all within its own facility.
Building and fully operationalizing this complete system represents a long-term accumulation of manufacturing expertise.
Upstream of heat treatment, Laifual Drive has maintained the same commitment:
We have built our own special steel smelting and flexspline precision forging lines. By 2025, the flexspline self-sufficiency rate exceeded 80%, ensuring material quality is under our control from the very source.
It is this full-chain, in-house control that makes consistency, stability, and traceability achievable.

The Value of Heat Treatment Translates to Product Performance
◀◀◀◀◀
Leveraging its full-chain process capabilities, including in-house heat treatment, Laifual Drive’s strain wave gears achieved the following by 2025:
- ±15 arc-seconds positioning accuracy
- Over 10,000 hours of service life
- Securing a position within the global first tier of precision transmission
Stable material properties and controlled heat treatment are among the foundational enablers that sustain these metrics.
Longer service cycles
Material-level stability translates to extended mean time between failures.
Greater consistency
In-house process control ensures uniform precision and life across batch production.
More reliable delivery
Critical processes do not rely on external subcontractors, keeping both lead times and quality under our own management.
As emerging applications such as humanoid robots move toward volume production, strain wave gears are entering an era of larger-scale, higher-consistency manufacturing. True competitive advantage increasingly lies in the invisible foundational processes.
Laifual Drive is already ahead: we have achieved in-house production across all critical processes, including material development, heat treatment, precision machining, and gear processing, and continue to expand heat treatment capacity, ensuring that this unseen process remains the solid foundation of reliability for precision transmission products.
Getting the fundamentals right. Getting every process right. That is the commitment Laifual Drive has always upheld.
